about

“Marit” is Annelies’ second full length. Annelies started recording the album in Hilversum, the Netherlands and continued the process, after moving there, in Gent, Belgium. For the first time, Annelies invited friends to play and sing. All musicians added their very own interpretations of proposed arrangements to the songs, without throwing overboard Annelies’ recognizable sense for simple, yet poignant melodies and stark sounds. This gives the album a significantly warmer sound and a less solitary feel than her previous material. It’s a diverse collection of songs ranging from a folky tale like “will you be found?” to the more droney “common ground” and the miniature piano song “can’t”. The album is a strong coherent whole, the beginning nicely tied up with the end.

Annelies Monseré sang, played piano, guitar, cello, glockenspiel and melodica. Nathan Amundson sang on 3, 4, and 9. Michael Anderson did effect on 4 and sang on 9. Jessica Bailiff sang on 6, 7, 8, 9 and 11, played 12-string electric guitar on 2, 8 and 11, violin-uke on 8 and 11, drums on 2 and 11, recorder on 7 and did production effects on 6.. Ellen Evers sang on 6 and 9 and played melodica on 6. Justin Vollmar sang on 6 and 9, played organ on 9, added wind on 1 and 12 and stairwell reverb throughout the record. Nathan Vollmar played drums, toy piano and xylophone on 9.

All songs written by Annelies, except 'september' written by A. Shaw/J. Shaw and originally performed by Cranes. 3, 4, 9, 10 and 11 were recorded in Hilversum, the Netherlands, 2006. 1, 2, 5, 6, 7, 8 and 12 were recorded in Gent, Belgium, 2007. Jessica, Justin and Nathan V recorded their part at home. Justin mixed and mastered the record.
